Sub Acromial Pain Syndrome

Close up of osteopath treating shoulder

Shoulder pain is a common problem that I see in clinical practice. Sub Acromial Pain Syndrome refers to pain coming from tissues that are in the sub acromial space of the shoulder, such as:

  • Rotator cuff tendons
  • Sub acromial bursa
  • Surrounding soft tissues

Pain usually occurs after the tissues are overloaded, you are asking them to do more than they were ready for! Sub acromial pain syndrome usually comes on after either a sudden increase in training or activity, repetitive overhead work, reduced movement in associated joints leading to overloading of the shoulder, or a previous injury.

Symptoms

  • Pain lifting the arm, especially overhead
  • Pain when lying on the affected side
  • Pain or weakness in the shoulder
  • A painful arc of movement in the shoulder

Osteopathic Treatment

This will usually involve:

  • Mobilisation of the shoulder and associated joints
  • Soft tissue massage to reduce tension in surrounding musculature
  • Improving function of the whole shoulder girdle
  • Modification of activities or training load

Exercise and Strengthening

Working on shoulder strengthening, stability and mobility is key to regaining full function in the shoulder. Grading the level of exercise to the individual is vital to see progressive improvements overtime and to reduce the risk of overloading and re-injuring.
